Our first composting toilet experience
Share
As a group of travel enthusiasts enjoying camping and hiking, we would like to put down some personal experience of using a composting toilet. It was before we had the idea to design our composting toilet. Whether you are looking to use in a vehicle or cabin, hope they will help your research a little bit. When we use a toilet in a camper van, we find a composting toilet ...
- needs a fan - it does smells , a fan is a must. In a small space like camper van, having a fan makes a lot of difference. Some said it won't smell if putting lots of composting agent. It's just not working for us.
- needs a window/door that can close off the solid bin when you are sitting. It's not just for the smell. Out of sight out of mind, unless you don't mind reaching in to close the door when full of "stuff" in there. So the "door" need to be able to operate while sitting is preferable.
- needs a bigger bin - solid waste may take weeks if not months to complete the composting process thoroughly. A toilet is too small hold all the content for long period time. So having a liner bag seems more practical and easier to transfer the content to a proper composting bin. In travelling situations like RV or camper van, composting may not be the highest priority, the bag will be most likely tossed away with other trash. Funny fact, we use the solid bin as a trash bin more than a toilet.
- needs a large urinal - male and female are different, bigger bowl is much cleaner and safer to use, especially at night, the bigger the better.
- easy to clean - I don't mind cleaning. But I definitely do not want to take the whole toilet out in order to clean it.
- flexible to tied-down - most toilets have a specified tie down location. It may not being able to align with the strong backing you prefer. A toilet having a flexible mounting spot would be preferable.
- easy to repaired/replaced - things do break. Some parts are proprietary. It's either irreplaceable or too expensive. We would prefer parts are easy to get at a reasonable price.
These are some of our personal experience when we have our first composting toilet. They may not be applicable to others. We try to address them when designing the Moloo Composting Toilet and may you find our experience useful.
Go out and have fun !
